loyalists, long the butt of rock-critic jokes, have a new reason to be
rankled: the artists listed on the Hall of Fame's 2011 ballot, which was
announced this morning, include the Beastie Boys, Neil Diamond, Alice
Cooper, Bon Jovi, Donovan, Tom Waits, LL Cool J, Dr. John, the J. Geils
Band, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex, and Chuck Willis.
The Beastie Boys got a nod in 2008. Nyro, LL Cool J, and Summer were
all nominated last year. Kiss is conspicuously absent, yet again.

Hard-rock
icon Kiss released its self-titled debut in 1974, which means in 1999
the band became eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame. But Kiss wasn't listed among the nominated bands in 1999 -- or
2000, or even 2001, for that matter. In 2009, the theatrical band
finally made the ballot, but it didn't rack up enough votes for
induction, and fans fumed while ABBA and the Stooges received the honor
instead.

Adding insult to injury, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame mentions Kiss in the press release
issued today announcing the new nominees -- in its write-up touting the
originality of Alice Cooper: "Before there was Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn
Manson or KISS, there was Alice Cooper, the original self-proclaimed
'rock villain.'"

Die-hard Kiss fans -- known as the Kiss Army --
immediately flooded the Internet with complaints about the perceived
snub, but not all of the band's devotees believe the band's legacy
depends on a Rock Hall stamp of approval.

"Kiss not getting into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is kind of like Pete Rose not getting
into the Baseball Hall of Fame: It's the best possible scenario for
everyone involved," Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural
North Dakota author and longtime Kiss fan Chuck Klosterman tells Yahoo!.
"Every year they get shut out, they're back in the news for not making
it -- people will actually notice far less if they ever get inducted.
Plus, being denied entry into the Hall of Fame advances the idea that
Kiss exists outside the canon of critically sanctioned rock, and it
perpetuates the idea that Kiss fans are unjustly persecuted for loving
Kiss, which is central to the Kiss-fan identity. I hope they never get
in. I'm sure they'll eventually build their own Hall of Fame, anyway,
just so they can not induct Vinnie Vincent."

Kiss members
themselves seem to have mixed feelings about being excluded from one of
rock's most elite clubs. "There are disco bands, rap bands, Yiddish folk
song bands in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but not Kiss," the band's
bassist and most recognizable figure Gene Simmons said in 2008, adding sarcastically, "I believe we have more gold records in America than any other group, but it's OK."

In a recent interview,
Simmons said, "There's nobody in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- in
fact, if you took all of them and put them together -- they couldn't
match all the licensing and merchandising we've done and the legacy
we've left." He echoed many outsiders' critiques of the Hall by
identifying a few famous inductees that aren't as "rock"-oriented as his
own band. "I mean, yes, Madonna's important. I have no [darned] idea
what she's doing in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Or Grandmaster Flash
or any other disco or rap artist."

This March, late-night host George Lopez took up the Kiss cause,
calling them "the greatest rock & roll band of all time" when
Simmons appeared on his show and posting a petition on his website (it currently has 5,265 "signature" comments). A similar effort has been posted to Facebook, where 1,044 people have "Liked" a page titled
"Get Kiss Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!" Kiss fans have also
taken to the streets in support of their face-painted heroes. In 2006,
approximately 200 members of the Kiss Army staged a protest outside the
Rock Hall's Ohio home.

Should Kiss ever gain entry to the Hall,
the band would be faced with a dilemma, though: Who would perform at the
induction ceremony? While Simmons and Paul Stanley are still actively
playing in the band, original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley have
split from the group several times. Original lineups traditionally
reunite for the Rock Hall ceremony, but not always happily. In 2006,
former members of Blondie stormed the stage and asked to perform, only
to be shot down by a ticked-off Debbie Harry ("Can't you see my real
band is up there?"). The following year, Van Halen joined the Hall, but
only former frontman Sammy Hagar and ex-bassist Michael Anthony showed
up at the ceremony.

Artists become eligible for the Rock Hall ballot 25 years after the
release of their first single or album. The final list of 2011 inductees
will be announced in December, and the induction ceremony -- the Hall's
26th annual event - will be held March 14 at Manhattan's Waldorf
Astoria. (The museum itself is in Cleveland; it began honoring musical
legends in 1986.)

What is wrong with SiteAdvisor?

For those of you that are not familiar with McAfee SiteAdvisor,
they are an online service that classifies websites into green, yellow
and red safety categories. The green classification indicates a site
with "very low or no risk", yellow represents "minor risks" and the red
flag warn users of "serious risks" associated with the site. The
service can be accessed via their website (siteadvisor.com)
and is widely distributed as toolbar version for Internet Explorer and
Firefox, providing on-the-fly site classifications as you browse the
web.

There has been widespread criticism for false positives/negatives
and the limited, slow or non existing efforts of McAfee to address
complaints from site owners.[read Wikipedia article]

We have been flagged "red" or "yellow" for several times in the
past, but were able to get this rating corrected, although it took
weeks or months to change our status back to "green".

As you may have noticed, we are back to "yellow" again and the time
has come to publicly address this false and unfair classification,
since it has the potential to cause some of our visitors to avoid
snapfiles.com.

How does SiteAdvisor work?

As far as downloads are concerned (they also check for browser
exploits, popups, spam etc.) McAfee claims to download all the files
that it finds on a site and then tests them for malware. In their own
words:

"We download and install each file we find – we even open zip
files. We then scan our test computer to see what changes have been
made. If a program is determined to be a virus, Trojan, or certain
other types of malware, that program will earn a red rating."

Sounds great, in theory, and if these ratings were fair and
consistent, the service could be quite useful. Unfortunately however,
the McAfee SiteAdvisor ratings are far from being fair and even further
from being consistent. In fact, one could argue that due to the large
number of false and misleading results, the service has become a
potential danger to those who rely on the results.

McAfee SiteAdvisor has (once again) decided to mark
Snapfiles.com with a "yellow" flag, thereby warning users of minor
risks associated with our site.
Let's take a look at the table below to see how McAfee SiteAdvisor ranks our competition:

Results based on SiteAdvisor reports as of January 1, 2010

I guess we should thank SiteAdvisor for
proving the fact that we are the safest choice among these sites!
According to their results, Snapfiles.com has the lowest number of risk
files, the lowest percentage of risk files and the lowest number of
negative reviews.

But wait..., why are we marked as "yellow" then?

Hmm, makes no sense, does it? Even the most critical observer can
see that there is something seriously wrong with the way that McAfee
SiteAdvisor assigns their site ratings.

How can sites
with dozens or even hundreds of red/yellow files be marked "green" and
a site with only 4 of these files be marked "yellow"?
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the system is, at best, "seriously flawed".

What are those 4 files that were flagged on our site?

only explanation given is that it installs a shortcut to Windows Media Player Classic on your desktop, which is a legitimate part of the installation package.
Windows Essentials Codec Pack does not install any promotional toolbars or the like.

freeyoutubeuploader.exe (Free YouTube Uploader)
This software is no longer listed with us. It was at some point, but we
removed it due to the fact that it installed a toolbar, even though the
user selected not to. SiteAdvisor could not have known this though,
since they claim that the software installs the "Ask" toolbar,
which it does not, it installs a "Conduit" toolbar. (The developer has
since fixed the installer and it no longer installs the toolbar without
authorization.)

Did somebody say "toolbar"?

McAfee SiteAdvisor appears to be sensitive to most toolbar
installations. The Yahoo! toolbar seems to be the only exception, it
also happens to be the toolbar that the McAfee SiteAdvisor software
installs on your computer, in addition to changing your default search
provider to Yahoo!.

Oddly enough, McAfee seems to have missed this fact when they scanned their own site, because the scan results for siteadvisor.com do not mention any toolbar installation at all!

In fact, the only file that they have listed for their own site is an old version of SiteAdvisor from 2007 (v.2.4.0), which does not install any toolbar, but is also no longer offered from their site.

All recent versions of McAfee SiteAdvisor install a Yahoo! toolbar AND change your browser's search settings (as you can see here), but for some reason these files, bundled with the Yahoo! toolbar, are not included in their scan results.

The only file that McAfee SiteAdvisor has found on their very own siteadvisor.com website is almost 3 years old! McAfee distributes the actual files from sadownload.mcafee.com, but here too, you will only find the old 2.x toolbar-free versions in the scan results.

Does McAfee not possess the technology to properly scan their own
sites? We doubt that. They seem to have no problems with finding
toolbar bundles from other brands, such as Ask or Google for example,
so why are they unable to find the toolbar bundles on their own
servers?

Why is it that only whites can be racists?

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="country-region"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="PlaceType"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="PlaceName"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype>

Epica is a Dutch symphonic
metal band founded by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen
subsequent to his departure from After
Forever.

History

Cry for the Moon (2002–2003)

In early 2002, Mark Jansen was fired from After
Forever due to creative differences. He then began looking for musicians
who would work towards a more classical/symphonic type of music project; this
was initially named "Sahara Dust". In late 2002, the band courted Helena
Michaelsen (from Trail of Tears) as its frontwoman, but
shortly after she was replaced by the then unknown mezzo-soprano
Simone
Simons, who was Jansen's girlfriend at the time. The band's line-up was
completed by guitarist Ad Sluijter, drummer Jeroen Simons, bassist Yves Huts,
and keyboard player Coen Janssen. The name was later changed to Epica, inspired
by Kamelot's eponymous
album.

Epica then assembled a choir (made up of two men and four women) and a string
orchestra (three violins, two violas, two cellos and an upright
bass) to play along with them. Still under the name Sahara Dust,
they produced a two-song demo entitled Cry for the Moon in 2003. As a
result, they were signed to Transmission Records.

The Phantom Agony (2003–2004)

Their debut album, The
Phantom Agony, was produced by Sascha
Paeth (known for having produced bands such as Angra,
Rhapsody
of Fire and Kamelot)
and released in late 2003. The song "Façade of Reality" on the album
was written about the September 11, 2001 attacks and includes
fragments from speeches by Tony Blair.

The album was followed by three singles: "The Phantom Agony", "Feint"
and "Cry for the Moon".

Consign to Oblivion / The Score (2005–2007)

Their second release, entitled Consign to Oblivion, was influenced by the
culture of the Mayan Civilization, which can be noticed on
songs in the "A New Age Dawns" series. "A New Age Dawns"
refers to the time system of the Mayan people, which extends up to the year of 2012, and makes no reference of what may happen past said year. Consign
to Oblivion was composed with film scores
as a basis, with Hans Zimmer and Danny
Elfman cited as major inspirations. The album features guest singing by Roy Khan
(from Kamelot)
on the song "Trois Vierges". Epica also joined Kamelot as a
support band on parts of their tour for promotion of the The
Black Halo album, to which Simons
had contributed her vocals on the track "The Haunting (Somewhere In
Time)".

Two singles were released from the album, "Solitary
Ground" and "Quietus (Silent Reverie)".

Epica's non-metal album The Score - An Epic Journey was released
in September 2005 and is the soundtrack for a Dutch
movie called Joyride, though it could also be considered
to be their third album. Mark Jansen describes the album as typical Epica,
"only without the singing, without the guitars, no bass and no
drums".

In 2005 and 2006 Epica went on their first tour throughout North
America with Kamelot.
After the tour, drummer Jeroen Simons left the band because of his wish to
pursue other musical interests. In Fall 2006, Simone once again contributed
vocals to album of Kamelot, this time on the tracks "Blücher" and
"Season's End" on the album Ghost Opera.
In December Ariën Van Weesenbeek from God
Dethroned was announced on Epica's official website as the guest drummer
for their new album, but not a permanent band member.

The Divine Conspiracy (2007–2009)

In September 2007, Epica headlined their first tour through North
America and released their fourth album, The Divine Conspiracy, this time on a new
label, Nuclear Blast. That December, Ariën Van Weesenbeek was announced to be
Epica's permanent new drummer. The band toured North America
again in April 2008 with Into Eternity and Symphony X,
this time with Amanda Somerville because Simone had contracted a
staph infection (MRSA).

The first single of the album was released on August 10, 2007 entitled
"Never Enough".

The second single, "Chasing the Dragon," was
released in 2008 without an accompanying video.

On 16 December
2008, Ad
Sluijter left the band. He left a message on his Myspace page with his
reasoning for leaving the band, which included frustration over being unable to
enjoy composing music because of deadlines. Ad's successor on guitar was
announced in January of 2009 to be Isaac
Delahaye, who is formerly of God
Dethroned fame.

In May of that year, Epica recorded The Classical Conspiracy, their first live album.
The live show included a 40-piece orchestra and a 30-piece choir. It was
released on <st1:date year="2009" day="8" month="5">May 8, 2009</st1:date>
through Nuclear Blast Records.

Design Your Universe (2009–Present)

On <st1:date year="2009" day="4" month="3">March 4, 2009</st1:date>, Epica
announced their return to the studio where they would begin the recording
process for a new album. In April 2009, it was revealed that the new album's
title would be "Design Your Universe". The album will be
released on 16th October. To promote this release, they will be performing in Amsterdam
at Paradiso on the 10th of the same month. This album will be new guitarist
Isaac Delahaye's first.

Style

The contrast between Simone
Simons' operatic vocals and Mark Jansen's
death
grunts is a feature of Epica's music.

Epica's performs a blend of progressive
metal, gothic metal and symphonic
metal.[17][18]
Another component of Epica's style is power metal
with their guitarist Ad Sluijter describing the band as "a bridge between
power metal and gothic metal." Vocalist Simone Simons has expressed a
preference for the group to be described as symphonic metal though the founder
of the group Mark Jansen notes that they do not mind being called gothic metal.

The music of Epica is aggressive, bombastic and excessive with some songs
being "epic, grand and majestic" and others "more subdued and
introspective." The band is also known to have progressive tendencies
while a gothic atmosphere and sentimentality is also present in their music.

Epica uses a "trademark of many symphonic and gothic metal bands"
in contrasting "two extremes, death grunts and brutality on one side, airy
female melodiousness on the other." Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic notes
that the band's "attraction ultimately hinges on exploring the sonic
contrasts of light and dark; the punishing intensity of those elephantine
guitar riffs and hyperactive drumming cast against the soaring, layered
sweetness of the orchestrated strings and keyboards." Simone Simons
delivers operatic vocals in a mezzo-soprano range though she has also been
known to sometimes sing "with a clear alto voice that has a flawless tone
and a lot of emotion." Mark Jansen delivers death
grunts "that are secondary to Simons' singing, but very important in
terms of balance and variety." The group is also known to employ human
choirs and orchestras with additional embellishments such as spoken word
recitals and lyrics in Latin and Arabic.

Avantasia is a symphonic metal/power metal project created by Tobias Sammet, vocalist and frontman of the power metal group Edguy. The project's title is a portmanteau of the words "avalon" and "fantasia" ("fantasy") and describes "a world beyond human imagination" (a quotation from the booklet). The project consists of a self-titled single, two full-length albums with the subtitle The Metal Opera, two EPs called Lost in Space, and the recently released album The Scarecrow.

Development

In Spring 1999, during Edguy's Theater of Salvation tour, Tobias Sammet began to write down his ideas for a metal opera, a concept album with many guest musicians. When the tour was finished, he carried this plan out, recruiting well-known metal players like Kai Hansen and the ex-Helloween singer Michael Kiske. The project was recorded with a core band of four members - Sammet playing keyboards and arranging orchestration, Henjo Richter playing guitar, Markus Grosskopf playing bass, and Alex Holzwarth on drums. In 2001, the self-titled single and the first full-length album, The Metal Opera, were released. The project was completed in September 2002 with the release of The Metal Opera Part II. At the end of 2006, Sammet confirmed the rumors of a third Avantasia album, due for release in 2008. On March 24, 2007, the name was confirmed to be "The Scarecrow". The album was released on January 25, 2008, and includes special guests Rudolf Schenker, Sascha Paeth, drummer Eric Singer, and singers Bob Catley, Jørn Lande, Michael Kiske, Alice Cooper, Roy Khan, Amanda Somerville and Oliver Hartmann. Tobias Sammet announced that a new album will be released by the end of 2009. Some of the special guests have been announced: drummers Eric Singer, Alex Holzwarth, and Felix Bohnke, as well as vocalists Michael Kiske, Bob Catley, Jørn Lande, Tim "Ripper" Owens, and Klaus Meine.
